How to create your content marketing budget.

1. Write down your goal.
It is not possible to stay on track if you don’t know where you’re going.
Without a clear and shared goal, your team cannot work together and the chance of your project becoming derailed is very high. To stay on track, pick one clear goal and let Abask provide you with the path to get there and measurable pit stops along the way.

2. Have a clear contract.
Our contracts lay out roles and responsibilities, what will happen if the project is added to in any way, and timelines/ deadlines for everything that we will be working on. We spend a lot of time on our proposals and timelines so that every customer can understand exactly what to expect and when. This additional time up front saves us all headaches and heartaches down the line.

3. Consider a retainer.
Have you ever noticed that a magazine purchased at a bookstore costs three times more than a magazine purchased with a subscription? Our services are the same. If you know that you will need continual help with your marketing, it’s cheaper to work with us on a retainer. Once we get to know you and get into a groove, everything is easier for everyone involved. Retainers allow us to become an extension of your company, speed up the delivery of your items, and make suggestions for improving your sales and marketing strategies. 4. Avoid paying by word count.
This is a common query we receive: how much do you charge per word? As soon as I hear this I know where I stand. With this thinking, you would pay more for a bad copywriter to write a 50-word headline than for an expert to write a 10-word headline that drives traffic. Why would you encourage any writer to write more than is necessary? For that matter, why would you dictate the way that an expert performs their craft?

5. Avoid hourly rates.
There are times when an hourly rate serves its purpose. For example, we are sometimes asked to travel to attend an event. We might offer an hourly or daily rate for these times. We charge hourly rates for editing also. Our rates are generally $125/hour for subject matter experts and $100/ editorial assistants. The problem with hourly rates is that it’s harder for a client to control costs. We recommend project rates with previously agreed-upon deadlines instead.

How Do You Price Your Services?

We price our services based on several factors:

  1. Industry Standards
    The baseline for our rates is taken from industry statistics, published annually by several sources, including Copyhackers.com, Hubspot, and American Writers and Artists, Inc.
  2. Our Qualifications
    Abask was started in 2010 by experts in rhetorical communication and former VPs of Marketing and Communication for leading organizations. We write content every day, stay on top of trends, and expand our knowledge of our craft continuously. We are award winners. We have written copy for restaurants, hotels, and cruise lines, construction companies and developers, schools and 3 universities, recruiters and staffing companies, a Nobel Prize Winner, and even the organization that delivers the President’s Daily Brief.  We are fast, we are talented, and we are worth our cost.

We offer discounts to previous customers and agencies. We are able to do this because a standing relationship helps us to move faster.

Do you write everything in-house?

Yes, we write everything in-house. If, at any time, we need to bring in an expert in your field, you will be introduced to them before we start creating.

What industries do you write for?

Most of our clients are in construction, recuriting, or the marine industry.

That being said, we have also worked with several restaurants, three universities, realty companies, vacation rentals, an airline, a cruise line, hotels, tech companies, a Nobel Peace Prize winner, and the nation’s largest car dealership.

We like working with open-minded, honest people. That’s our favorite niche.

What is the most common project you work on?

We probably write more websites and emails for clients than anything else but we have written a lot of speeches, ebooks, blogs, brochures, and proposals too. If you have a project we didn’t list, feel free to send us a request. If it’s not our cup of tea, we can probably refer you to an expert copywriter for that arena.

Are we crazy for grammar?

No! We don’t believe that excellent copy and perfect grammar have to go hand in hand. We believe you should write in a conversational tone to engage people. When you read, you want to feel like you’re being spoken to OR you are watching the story unfold. That doesn’t always happen with perfect grammar.

The best copy stirs emotions. Words like “synergy” are the antithesis to connecting with people. When was the last time a friend asked you to coffee in order to synergize?

What will we not do?

We won’t swim with sharks.

We also won’t write controversial copy. We don’t need the guilt.
We won’t charge per word. If that’s your bag, baby, that’s fine. Google “cheap copywriters” and take your pick. Just remember, you get what you pay for.
We won’t work with jerky people. If you’re not a jerk, then we would love to work with you! If you are, take a breath and put the kettle on. Then, Google “cheap copywriters.”

What's one thing nobody asks you?

Are there any guarantees?

Yes, death and taxes are both guaranteed.

If we enter into a retainer agreement, we will work on your project for as long as it takes to make you happy (usually two rounds of edits). If we work on an individual project with, we will provide you with three rounds of edits.
